Sunday Reading 11-13-11

“It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers.” – James Thurber. The main questions we have every week at this time, is what comics are you reading that were just so fantastic you have to sing their praises?

We don’t have all the answers but here is what we are going to answer with: Huntress #2, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #4, , Green Lantern #3, Ducktales #6 / Darkwing Duck #18, and Batwoman #3.

For those looking for the answer as to what happened to Sunday Reading last week, well it’s my entire fault.  Had some things that completely took me away and just left no time to get this up. However most of those to remain mysterious things are now mostly behind me and we can return to our regularly scheduled Sunday.

My own comic reading is a little light this week and I’m not finding a lot I want to talk about so let me sit back a little bit and see what the other Comic Bloc writers extraordinaire have to say.

Huntress #2

To kick off this week let’s take some time with Adam Schiewe as he brings his first highlight to this Sunday and talks about a title that many people might be overlooking:

“There is something about this book that just works. Between the action packed, yet character driven Art by Marcus To and the simple story Levitz is telling that make this book work. One minute its a action drama driven by Helena as she hunts down some criminals and the next its her in a cafe talking with friends. It all adds to this book in a way that makes you turn the pages and want to know what happens. We also know this book ties into the JSA title next year, though I have no idea how, regardless this is a fun, well crafted book that deserves some love.”

The fact that this book is supposed to lead into a new JSA title next year might make this book a little more sought after once the JSA book launches. Don’t be left looking for back issues when you can find the title now.

Ducktales #6 & Darkwing Duck #18

Robert McSantos gives us a double header this week as he continues his recommendation of the Boom Disney books. Hopefully these books will continue such high quality as they transition into their next phase of life:

“A double helping of ducks this week finishes not only the first true Ducktales/Darkwing Duck crossover, but also all Disney comics at Boom Studios, forever. The way they defeat the main villain of the piece is both rushed and incredibly sappy, but it does do a good job of wrapping up all lingering plotlines from both series. They really go all out with the cameos, including the Duckverse’s founding father himself. Even the much reviled Bubba the Caveduck gets his own panel. Now the ball’s in Marvel’s court as to whether or not these series get relaunched. Hopefully, they’ll give it a shot.”

Ultimate comics: Spider-Man #4

Over to the world of Marvel comics we get a look at a new Spider-Man. The thing that really intrigues me about this concept is that Miles is choosing to be Spider-Man, a very nice change to the normally angst driven origins we normally see. Adam Schiewe says it best:

“There it is. There is the event that will drive Miles in his superhero career. We see the death of Peter from a new perspective, and if we go back to the death issue we can actually see Miles. This is a new Spider-Man for a new generation in more ways than one, gone is the tragic death of a family member angle of a hero’s origin and instead we get the death of an icon as a reason for Miles to don the tights. He never knew Peter Parker, he has not felt personal loss, he was not a sidekick who stepped up. Miles was a scared kid who felt the loss of an icon just like everyone else, except he can honor the legacy that is left behind better than most. That is what will define Miles run as Spider-Man, he is a hero who chooses to become one because it’s the right thing, because he can, because he has been inspired. Just a fantastic issue.”

Green Lantern #3

This is one of the few books I’ve read this week and I continue to enjoy. This is a story about Hal Jordan and using Sinestro to put Hal into place and kind of deconstruct him is far working really well. While Hal is realizing he is defined by his ring he is also realizing there is more to that whole world then he realized. It’s an interesting dynamic that I am looking forward to seeing how it all plays out; that and the big war with the Sinestro Corps.

Robert McSantos also enjoyed this issue and added some quick insights into the issue:

“Those who’ve been wanting a bit more action in their Green Lantern will get it in this issue. There’s also some hints at what could be a major storyline for the entire Green Lantern family sometime in the future. A character is introduced who may or may not be the return of an old character who hasn’t been seen since the O’Neal/Adams days, but nothing’s confirmed yet.”

Top Recommendation: Batwoman #3

It seems only Adam Schiewe read this issue this week but his review is a strong one and the fact that he considers it to be one of the best books of DCU’s new 52 means that maybe we should all be giving it a look:

“I am not sure what I can say about this book that I have not said before, but month in and month out this book is worth every penny of the $2.99 price tag. No book on the market has art that can match it, and the writing is just as good as most other books on the market. We get more inner drama for Kate as she has an encounter with both the Weeping Woman as well as the D.E.O. Her personal life is a mess that she is drowning in, her love life, father and cousin are all trying to pull he up in their own ways but she just keeps sinking down. We waited months for this book as it got rescheduled and saw the loss of it’s original writer, but Williams and Blackman have more than upped the game crafting on of the best books in the new 52.”

Well that’s it for our look at the past week of comics here on the Comic Bloc.  Remember while we only have some of the answers but that does lead us to another question: What books do you think made the grade this week? Feel free to give us your thoughts; I for one would be interested in seeing them.

Till then, I’m your host Skip Scherer (lionknight) and I’ll be seeing you on the Bloc.
