Default A shout out to Zauriel...

Just wanted to start a thread saying what I say as often as I possibly can: BRING BACK ZAURIEL!!! The dude has too much potential to be sitting around limbo. How could anybody NOT want to see this great Grant Morrison creation dusted off?

Zauriel is kind of like Bloodwynd from the Jurgens era. These guys cooked up these mystical characters, but when they left the books no one ever hears from them again. Maybe it's better they fade to oblivion.

Zauriel has been heard from again. He was featured in the Supergirl, JSA, and Spectre titles. (He's also popped up in the JLU comic.)

He was a natural for those titles because they involved lead characters (Linda Danvers, Hawkgirl, and Hal Jordan) who were in need of spiritual counseling. But Zauriel's ability to read people's spiritual states isn't the best part of his character.

What makes Zauriel great is that he's an ordinary joe. He was the League member most likely to invite you out for coffee or a beer. He could have stayed in Heaven, but chose to leave - and to stay with us ordinary folks - because he genuinely cares about humanity so much.

There's a lot that could be done with that. I'd love to see a Zauriel series where he went around helping ordinary people get through rough spots in their lives. Zauriel and Mr. Terrific really ought to team up; they have essentially the same mandate - to help the little guy - but with diametrically opposite religious convictions. The fact that they'd probably really like each other would only add to that philosophical tension. Make Janissary a supporting character, as well.

An angel is ideal for the JLA, with its emphasis on iconic characters who embody basic human excellences. Everybody knows what an angel is without having to explain things like morphogenetic fields or tactile telekinesis. The core JLA are embodiments of "strong," "smart," "fast," "wise" - Zauriel adds "holy" to that list in a way that even the coolest mystics can't.

No way should Zauriel be allowed to fade into oblivion. The only challenge is not having Zauriel's Christianity be taken as a tacit acceptance that Zauriel's religion is the "One, True" religion, and focusing on his compassion instead of any particular dogma. But DC has already shown that they can use Zauriel well, and that they're open to exploring Christian mythology and lore for good storytelling. No reason they can't do more.

I liked his costume better in his first appearances - the loincloth and trappings, etc. The heavenly armor outfit just didn't do it for me.

I'd rather see him encounter the Spectre whenever it grabs a new host. Maybe have the ability to morph into a human-like visage as well.

All the best...

I wish Zauriel was around when Jason Blood was briefly on the team. That would have been......interesting.

Keep the armor makes him look badass, but I agree with the Spectre teamup. He could be the Spectre's conscious or something.

I've always wanted a "buddy" team-up story with Zauriel and Etrigan. That would be fun. And I agree with the direction that Peirill suggested.

Zauriel works nights at Guy Gardner's Warriors bar.

Think of what being a part of the divine essence means. When Zauriel listens to a drunken harangue, the drunk really feels better. His clothes never get stained or need ironing. (Zauriel the only one who doesn't stink of vomit and wet animal fur when they have to throw Detective Chimp back out to the inter-dimensional bar!! )

And let's face it. Only someone who's REALLY been high can make a good highball.

Man.

Actually, that would be hilarious.

If I were writing that, I'd take my cue from the Promethea comic, in which the demons think the angels are running a scam (hey, that's what the demons would be doing, in their place), and the angels think the demons aren't so bad, really.

Zauriel ought to be sympathetic towards Jason and amused with Etrigan.

Definitely, Zauriel should know his way around liquor. Hey, if wine was good enough for Christ, it's good enough for the angelic host, I say.

Besides, he'd be PERFECT as the commiserating bartender at a JLA/JSA mixer.

I liked how Zauriel always provided an outside view of things, uncommon to the regular heroes. Here's hoping Zauriel finds somewhere to haunt the dcu in the near future.

I get this mental picture of Zauriel in the Sam Malone role and Cain and Abel in the roles of Norm and Cliff.

I would like to see Zauriel back also. He is a great character and I think I prefer his original garb to the armor deal too.
