Well, you could ask Mr Marz who frequents these boards as he DID write an origin story for Sinestro a few years back. I believe he did give Sinestro a different name BEFORE he had a taste for the rings power.

Even if the ring translates Sinestro. Why would it translate it in latin to Hal and not english. They could of give a Krougarian name before he became Sinestro. You can post all the what if's.

I can think of three explanations.

1. Sinestro's name is in a "dead" Korugarian language, just as Latin is "dead" on Earth.

2. The Korugarian word for "left-handed" also has the connotation of "evil" just like "sinister". Calling him "Lefty" would lose that effect.

3. The ring chose a name that would stand out as a proper noun rather than being easily mistaken for its common English counterpart.

Personally, I like #2 the best.

In case you were wondering, the Romans really did assign "evil" or at least bad luck to the left side (as did many other cultures). So the double-entendre is intentional. They even ate reclined on their left side so that they would eat their food with their right hands. Sorry, all you southpaws; you're just not wanted in Italy.

I'm done.

The way I see it what his name means in Korugarian is he who loves puppies and helps little old ladies across the street.

Then what about Katma Tui. That is her Krougarian name and it is not translated. My debate is if DC has made up a story that relates to Sinestro before he went evil why is he called Sinestro or any aspects of the meaning of name that mean sinister before he was bad? Why didn't Hal or other GL's question it?

Obviously, Sinestro's name had a sound in it that was unpronounceable to the human species. Katma Tui and Soranik Natu, on the other hand, are names that are fully pronounceable by humans and therefore unneeding of a translation.

We seriously need a Fanwank 101 class around here.

Is where it was, in a 10 page story that has Hal and Ganthet talking about how Sinestro was picked. I don't think his real name was really revealed, but I could be wrong.

Wasn't he called Sinestro in Emerald Dawn II?

And his name being "Sinestro" means absolutely nothing. Just because "sinister" means something in our language doesn't mean it has the same definition in other language.

There are words in our language that, pronounced the same way, have very different meanings in other languages on this planet. So it's not hard to believe that a similar sounding word on a competely different planet would have a different meaning.

Plus, there were no Romans on Korugar to distort the meaning of the word sinister, so if it had the same meaning as it did here then it would maintain the original meaning on our planet, which is "left handed".

And now, Sinestro is known as such a villain on Korugar, that the word now means "evil" in their language too.

Nope, you're right. His true name has been lost.

I think it's probably Dexter.

I think Katma Tui translates from Krougarian into "she who is like unto Ashley Judd" or something like that.

From what I recall the root of Sinestro is sinister which means unlucky, left, malevolence, menace, harmful, menacing, ominous, threatening, evil, disturbing, creepy, baleful.
Right there were no Romans on Krougar but the ring translated the name into Latin anyway. Even before the Latin adjective of Sinestro would still root back to as evil, unlucky etc....
Sinestro was introduced as a bad character until the reboot of Hal's origin where we see in ED he is a GL but still was called Sinestro. "Slams fist on table" It doesn't make sense!!!!That is something the writer should of been aware IMO.
It's like Anikin Skywalker he wasn't always Darth Vader right?

Thank you. Done and done.

I'm still wondering why any Green Lantern would use a code name, anyway.

I always knew those left-handed people were sinister. Now it's confirmed.
