From THR.com: DC adaptation to be Jimmy Hayward's live-action debut

Jimmy Hayward, who directed the animated "Horton Hears a Who!" will make his live-action debut with "Jonah Hex," the Warner Bros. western based on the DC Comics character.

Josh Brolin is attached to star in the film, which previously had Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor ("Crank") on board as directors. The duo, who also wrote the script, bowed out over creative differences in November. The studio, which hopes to put the movie into production in March or April, went on a fast-track search, putting together a short list that included such names as Andy Fickman and McG before narrowing it down to Hayward.

The character of Hex, known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, was a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood. One incarnation of his comic book series saw the Western genre combined with supernatural elements, and it's this aspect that was featured in Neveldine and Taylor's script. The studio will likely keep the script, though it's expected that Hayward will put his stamp on it.

If it's a $10 million budget movie then go for it! Doesn't sound promising.

What the hell is Warner Bros doing??? They "F-up" Shazam, Green Arrow, Flash, Wonder Woman and now Hex.

They've made some questionable choices and decisions, but nothing's made yet.

How the hell does one go from directing a Dr. Seuss story to something like Jonah Hex? With Supernatural elements at that.

I shouldn't prejudge like that, but it's quite a shift.

Brolin on Hex director
Collider caught up with Brolin, who discussed HORTON HEARS A WHO director Jimmy Hayward's path to the gig: "I just think that Jimmy is truly brilliant," Brolin proclaims. "He got an e-mail to me somehow, someway. He wasn't somebody we were even beginning to look at and I read the e-mail and was completely blown away by it. I had to meet the guy."

"I ended up meeting the guy and I think he's so far beyond most of us in his expertise and his filmic abilities. It was one of those things where I brought him to the studio and I said, 'I think this is the guy. I don't know why.' But I think he's a brilliant, brilliant filmmaker. I can't wait to see what he does. So I don't know how to answer your question, but I can't wait to see what he does."

Malkovich gets Hex'd
The hard-working thesp will play Turnbull, "a wealthy Southern plantation owner whose son is killed by Union soldiers during the Civil War." Believing Hex is responsible for his son's death, he puts the scar-faced gunslinger in his sights.

Crap, Brolin and now Malkovich?

This is shaping up to be one hell of a cast.

Cool! A Brolin vs Malkovich face off in the Old West? Sounds good to me.

Megan Fox to Star in Jonah Hex
In "Hex," being directed by Jimmy Hayward, Fox will play Leila, a gun-wielding beauty and love interest of Hex (Brolin), a scarred bounty hunter tracking a voodoo practitioner (Malkovich) who wants to raise an army of undead to liberate the South.

Will Arnett and Oscar Nominee Michael Shannon join the cast

They keep talking about the voodoo practitioner stuff. Didn't Jimmy Palmiotti debunk that?

I have high hopes that this movie is going to be awesome. I want to see it more than the GL movie at this point.

Jimmy Palmiotti has been reassuring people that there won't be any Zombie armies or other supernatural nonsense in the film.

Apparently, one of the key producers is a friend of his so he's got all the latest news. I don't remember if he said he's been officially consulted about Hex, but no doubt there have been in depth conversations about the comic and the character.

I really can't wait to see the on the set pictures of Brolin in the Hex makeup. I wonder how far they'll go with it.
