Default Birds of Prey #81

I gotta say, I loved Birds of Prey #81 this week.

Despite the fact that Babs and Helena didn't play a big role during this issue, I loved seeing Ted and Dinah interact. And when Helena did appear at the ending, with Creote and Savant, it was the highlight of the issue for me.

I also have to give props to the new art team. Despite liking Ed Benes's art a lot, this was a welcome change.

Keep up the awesome work, Gail!

I was confused by the issue at first, because it really picks up in media res... but I got into it quickly. i LOVE the Dinah-Ted interaction, they're so much fun together. And Dinah's pigging out... she's my kind of gal. I'm looking forward to seeing where this arc goes. It's really interesting to see Babs kind of falling apart, it's obvious that this Braniac thing is really taking a toll on her, and she's not as omniescient as she normally is.

Loved seeing Helena the mob boss at the end!! Can't wait for the next ish. I agree with anxia, the artwork was a nice change, I really like it.

That last page! Wow! I was just harping on Helena getting in touch with her past.

And I couldn't be happier with the Ted/Dinah interaction.

Fantastic issue, Gail. I love you more and more each month.

I loved Ted and Dinah's interaction, that was the best. That was one hell of a last page though. Not to mention who Helena had as back up.

This was another great issue with both superior art and story. Bennett is a great choice for this book. In addition to the birds, he draws a great cat. I am never disappointed by this book.

It took my number 1 of the week:

1) Birds of Prey #81 - Gail is the bomb-diggity! I think of Gail, like Kurt Busiek, as an old school writer. In a time where so many writers seem to delight in being economical with their words or not using captions, they don't do that and as a result they provide dense, satisfying reads that present both action and great characterization. I know when I open one of her books I am going to be entertained for 15-20 minutes, and even more importantly, I am going to really enjoy it. I hope she never leaves this book and if her Action and Villains United work is as strong I think BOP is in for a pretty good increase in readership! Bennett's art was also very good and he should satisfy those of us who were sorry to see Ed Benes go. Another title that should get the glossier paper! Grade: A

I also have to say that I loved that last page splash, but the highlight of the issue was Dinah and Grant. "Death by ice cream" mmm mmm.

I just bought my very first issue of Birds of Prey today and I was very impressed with it. Ted Grant (one of my fav heroes ever) has dropped by to give a hand and it was pretty awesome to see him and Dinah together again. I'm intrigued to see what happened before this issue came out. (Might say I'm getting converted to a new series again.)

I thought it was a great read. When I was reading thru the story and saw about some of the previous key figures, I was like OK probably a next storyline foreshadowed until the end and then it was WHOA, didn't expect that. I liked the Ted interaction, but he seemed older in appearance than he does in JSA. Can't wait to see what happens next.
