Default On Sectors and Geometry, part 1

I just received my first stack of comic books I bought off ebay now that Iím collecting again and itís whet my appetite for discussing stuff. So I decided to start a thread related to something interesting that David brought up on another discussion board, namely the set-up of the GL sectors. I decided to split the thread into two, so that people not interested in a debate on this matter could still help me in some fact-finding. So, this first post should be only used to add facts that Iím interested in, as detailed below. If you want to discuss the ramifications of this or discuss just how big the DCU and in particular the area under control of the GLC, see my other thread.

WARNING: My contribution to both of these threads is likely to get a little long, donít read if you donít like detailed discussion.

In a nutshell, what Iím trying to gather here is any information that has actually been seen in the DCU that indicates something about the way the sectors are set-up and where the various sectors are located. Iíll list what I know about the sectors, and then some specific questions that other people might be able to answer, but feel free to add any relevant information. Mostly this information should be in reference to known/real starts. It doesnít help much to know that star ďGoogly-mooglyĒ is in Sector 3 for example, although I did include Krypton in my known facts, just because itís so important. If you know references for any facts you state, that would be useful, but things you just remember are fine too.

What is known (by me):

1) Earth is in sector 2814, out of 3600 (pretty obvious, this one)
2) Sector 2814 is bordered by Tomar-Reís sector (Iím sure someone can provide the sector number.) I believe I remember that this is also the sector the Krypton resides in, but maybe someone can confirm and give a reference.
3) In Emerald Dawn I, #3, Halís ring accesses memories from sectors 2815, 2816, 2817, but it was hard to tell whether these are just sectors close to 2814, and therefore in the ringís memories, or whether it was accessing the sectors that Legion had marauded through, thus they would each border the next one.
4) Sector 407 includes part of the Large Magellanic Cloud
5) Sector 3600 contains no stars, and 3599 contains few (Rebirth Preview), thus placing them outside the main part of the Milky Way.

And thatís it, so you can see why I need help!!! Here are some particular questions:

Are any other real stars such as Alpha Centauri, or Barnardís Star known to be in 2814?

I know either Rann or Thanagar (Rann I think) is located at Polaris, is the sector of either of these known?

Have any GL stories taken place at locations known to be in a Galaxy other then the Milky Way? If so, where, and what sectors? Please differentiate between places where a specific galaxy is mentioned vs just an implication that the story was extra-galactic, since it makes a difference to the debate in the other thread. This question is an important one to me, even if no sector numbers are mentioned.

Which other sectors are known to border sector 2814? Was the sector of Sinestro/Katma Tui a neighboring sector?

Can any other sectors be definitely placed in the Milky Way or any other galaxy, or at least outside the Milky Way? This could be done indirectly if, for example, a sector was known to include Tamaranea (this is a hatchet job Iím sure, Koriandírís home world from Teen Titans) and elsewhere it was established that this homeworld was in the Milky Way, that would be sufficient.

Any other evidence about the scope of the GLCís activities, the Guardianís domain and the DCU in general would be welcome. For more information on why Iím interested, beyond just some fun and a test of the body of knowledge thatís out there, see part 2 of this post. Hopefully part 2 will even be of interest to the DC creative types who read this board, but at least it will be entertaining for the more detail oriented of us.

Astroape contributed this useful info under part 2 of this thread:

"Rann used to revolve around Alpha Centari. Thanagar still revolved around Polaris. They both used to be in sector 2814, but I think that has changed. I don't think Polaris is in 2814 anymore.

"Also, sector 3,600 was a sentient sector. It actually went mad and was tool of Sinestro's to fight the GLC. This was the arc that had Olapet, Flodo Span, and Driq in it."

Thanks Astro for straightening me out Rann/Thanagar. Can anyone confirm if Polaris is in another sector now? Anyone with other information can post it directly here, so I can keep the debate in part 2 separate.

I can promise Polaris is in another sector now. In the coming GLC mini, Rann and Thanagar will each get a GL. So, mark the Polaris system as another sector.

I agree that this seems to indicate that Polaris is in a new sector. Where does that leave Rann though? If Rann stays in the Polaris vicinity, it would be fine since there will be 2 GL's per sector, or at least so I've heard. If Rann gets returned to Alpha Centauri, however, it would be rather odd to have Rann not in Earth's sector, since that would be put Earth right at the border between sectors and nowhere near the center of sector 2814.

The Green Lantern Corps Page

You may or may not know of the above link, but there it is(I'm assuming not, since there's a bit of info on sectors 2814 and 2815 that would seem to answer a couple of your lesser planet questions). The information isn't complete(being that it's been transfered from the original GLC page to this new DCU guide page, and that info hadn't been updated in ages), but it may give you a leg up on a few things. Check the Book of OA for links to GL profiles/homeworlds and a limited Space Sector guide. For what it's worth anyway.

There's a few (non fictional) worlds / star systems that have been revealed to be in certain sectors. All the systems below are located in the Milky Way galaxy, so that's at least 150 sectors cutting through our galaxy.

2682 - Polaris star system. 431 ly (light years from Earth.)
2814 - Good 'ol Earth
2828 - Vega star system. 25.3 ly. (in the comics it's a red sun, in reality it's white)
2832 - Capella star system. 42 ly.

Krypton is said to be 50 light years from Earth, but it's also said (at times) to be in a different galaxy. It's in Sector 2813, as is Xudar, which is said to be in a differnet galaxy.

Just for reference, Alpha Centauri is 4.395 ly from Earth.

Wow, thanks for all the info. I assume this is an update to the Sector listing I checked out on the glcorps web page, since it includes a lot more info. (I checked for Polaris on the web page and it wasn't there.) I see Alpha Centauri is still not on the list, is not known to be definitely in sector 2814? As I mentioned before, that would strange if it wasn't.

Also, having just read this back issue, I can add that the Poglachi homeworld, in sector 3273 (which is on your list) is indicated as being at the Crab Nebula, which is also located in the Milky Way.

Also, several other real stars on your list, Vega at 27 l.y. (sector 2828), Capella 42.2 l.y. (sector 2832). Perhaps most interesting of all is Omicron Ceti at 418 l.y. but located in good old sector 2814.

Cygnus is a constellation, not a star, but Cygnus IV which is on your list is interesting for the sci fi buffs since it is also the star at which "Encounter at Farpoint" occurred, the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Oh, by the way, I went back to look up the Capella reference since I've been buying the Rann-Thanagar series and was surprised to discover it's listed as being in Sector 2832 in issue #1 but in Sector 2682 in issue #2. I think issue #1 is probably right, since 2682 is where the war is and Kilowog ordered Kyle to stay away from it.

Yes, it's a yet-to-be posted update (there's a lot of 'em!). At the time the DCU Guide version of the GLCWP was posted, Thanagar's sector had not been established. There was some talk in a letter column (don't ask me which title) about Thanagar and / or Rann being "border world(s)" which might rotate in and out of Sector 2814. While I'd assume quite a number of DCU worlds are in 2814, unless they're specifically established as such, I leave them out.

I don't have the issues handy, but I'll go with the "first appearance" unless there's consistent references to the contrary in future "appearances."
