Default New Dr. Fate series - written by Steve Gerber

http://www.comicon.com/cgi-bin/ultim...;f=36;t=005689

The Doctor is in, but what will his Fate be? A new Dr. Fate ongoing series featuring Kent Nelson, the grand-nephew of the Golden Age incarnation begins this February. Steve Gerber is writing the series according to Wizard # 182.

Old news I think, but Steve Gerber is great and needs to get more work.

Who's checking this series out?

Well that should make some people happy that we get a KENT NELSON back as Dr. Fate.

All right. I just saw this over on the newsrama thread on the JSA board, but
two comments make it pretty clear to me Steve wasn't given or didn't read the Doctor Fate Archive stories.

"[Dr. Fate's] powers and source of his powers have never been clear. His limitations have never been made.
ddf
Only partially true. More Fun Comics # 72 contained a summary of his powers and where they came from. We didn't know where all the magical gewgaws came from or why lack of oxygen seemed to affect his powers. But his powers were clear.

We're going to change all that. The new series will plunge right into the DCU's newly-evolving Tenth Age of Magic."

Gerber told Wizard, "The book is about the intersection of psychology and magic. It's about where demons of the mind and demons of the spirit meet, and how they act upon each other to affect the physical world. It is really scary sh--."
ddf
So this really is a completely new take on Doctor Fate. It doesn't immediately sound like the original Doctor Fate concept at all. But I'm not sure Gerber was mapping out Doctor Fate so much as where he was going to take the stories.

It almost sounds like Len Wein's run of Phantom Stranger stories in the 1970's and Alan Moore's Swamp Thing series.

Anyway, the tease was interesting.

Actually, YES!! It does make me happy that we aren't starting completely from scratch.

Actually this sound great. A very intruiging setup and I can't wait to hold the first issue in my hands.

I'll check out the first issue, but I think it should either be the original Kent Nelson, or Hector as Dr. Fate.

Sounds like the right guy on this character.

I have always felt that if they intend to do the GA version of the character they should stay true to the concept and not play around with it too much .. but if they were going to do something different than they should defintioely just go for it and make sure its the best it can be. I understood where they were going with Fate ... I just kind of feel that the concept had been somewhat played by the time the got to it ... likewise I like the MD and SM version right after Crisis but wondered if it was a little 'too mature' in concept for the audience twenty years ago.

Steve Gerber remains one of my very favorite writes of all time. I sitll have a jar of Gerber Strained Brains in my cupbard

Dr. Fate has been one of my favorites heroes. I always thought DC underutilized him. Glad to see that he is going to be the number one Magic character of the DC universe
