Not really a big deal from a series perspective. The Mummy's Ghost and The Mummy's Curse (4th and 5th film in the 1940s Kharis series) featured a female mummy Ananka (as a reincarnated woman who becomes a mummy in the former, and as a mummy that gets reincarnated when uncovered in the sun in the latter).

Side note, Virginia Christie - Ananka in CURSE was Mrs. Olsen in the Folgers commercials in the 60s and 70s.

Also, its a familiar theme to Mummy Monster fans as Bram Stoker's THE JEWEL OF SEVEN STARS contains a sorta-kinda female Mummy as well (also seen in the film adaptions, BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB, THE AWAKENING, THE TOMB and BRAM STOKER'S LEGEND OF THE MUMMY) not to mention the several original female mummy films out there.

Its interesting that from a scenario perspective they have two of them, which makes me wonder what backed them off of the scenario they originally had touted?

Hollywood is all about diversity this year.
They just want to fit in.
