From Heat Vision:
'Venom' to be written and possibly directed by Gary Ross
Gary Ross is writing “Venom,” Columbia’s “Spider-Man” spinoff based on one of the villains from “Spider-Man 3,” as a potential directing vehicle. Ross is already writing “Spider-Man 4” for the studio.

In the comics, Venom is a gooey alien parasite that bonds with Peter Parker and later his newsroom rival, among other people, becoming one of more popular villains in "Spider-Man’s" rogue gallery.

Topher Grace portrayed the character in the 2007 movie, which ended with both the human and the alien symbiote apparently destroyed in an explosion.

The studio had no comment on Grace’s involvement nor on Ross writing the project.

Avi Arad and Marvel are producing the movie.

Ross, repped by CAA, hasn’t directed a movie since 2003’s “Seabiscuit.”

From MTV:
'Spider-Man 4' Screenwriter To Rewrite And Direct 'Venom' Movie?

From Variety:
Ross To Helm "Venom"
The relationship between Columbia Pictures and Gary Ross that began with his rewrite on “Spider-Man 4” is taking a “Venom”-ous turn.

I am hearing that the studio is in talks with Ross to helm the Spidey-spinoff “Venom,” and rewrite the script.

Ross will begin writing the script as soon as he completes the “Spider-Man” film.

While Venom showed up in the last Spidey installment, the intention is to start from scratch. Topher Grace played him in the last picture but the role will likely be recast.

Developing…

Hopefully no that 70s show guy this time.

He did ok to me in the role, but he just isn't intimidating at all to me. The thing that kicks ass to me (one of the things anyway) is that- ok, this symbiote stuff gets on a morally upstanding, nerdy, scrawny kid and he turns into a hotshot jerk- powerful as hell. So, what happens when that same stuff gets on someone not so morally upstanding and is ALREADY kind of a big hotshot jerk with muscles? The interesting thing on top of that was that, while he wasn't morally sound, he was a devout christian, it seemed.

I just want to see somebody who's a bad-ass BEFORE he puts on the suit- even if he's a little bit of a slimy character as well (eddie brock was a bit of a *****, IMO- at first).

In the movie, eddie was just peter parker if he was a weasel.

So...they either make a spin-off to a franchise they're rebooting or they go clean slate but....don't use Spider-Man?

I hope it's Flash Thompson Agent Venom because A) I think that'a far more interesting concept and a decent book and B) I'd fear for the future of the title if it's traditional venom as they sometimes like to streamline all media.

Venom Movie Set To Cross Over With The Amazing Spider-Man
It’s an Eddie Brock story… We want to be as close to the comics as possible. Especially in Eddie Brock’s story.

Is this a calculated piece of misdirection, or is Amazing Spider-Man 2 a direct prequel to a Venom movie starring Dane DeHaan?

Nope; if the meeting is with Marvel definitely not. If it was at Fox, maybe.

Venom seems an odd choice, unless this is a shot across the bows of Sony.

As cool as Absorbing Man played by Diesel would be, I cannot see him as a Villain - headliner makes more sense with his profile.

The issue of ethnicity aside, he could be cool as Black Panther as he could bring a physicality to the role, but due to the issue of ethnicity would that create an internet storm of some kind if this was the route they went along?

If the role of Drax was not already cast - THAT is what i would see as more likely; unless the role is about to be re-cast...

The new 52 - probably not for me...
