Default The Guardians of...

I grew up knowing everyone's favorite Blue Guys this side of the Smurfs as the Guardians of the Galaxy, but in The Rann-Thanagar War, Adam Strange calls them "The Guardians of Oa."

Now seeing as how R-T W is written by Dave Gibbons, who is also writing "Green Lantern Corps Recharged," could this be a hint of the Guardian's new plan for the Corps?

That they no longer see themselves as guarding the Galaxy, but maybe, due to Parallax being in the Battery, they feel they need to protect Oa/themselves?

Meaning: before the Corps charge was protecting the Galaxy as a whole, which seems more altruistic. But protecting Oa sounds more like the Controllers ideology of thwarting evil before it affects them.

Another way to look at it is that maybe they (or the universe) recognizes other "guardians" and that the Blue Guys are not the Guardians of the Galaxy, but just a group of Guardians. So they'd be the Guardians of Oa, meaning that's where they live and not that's what they are protecting.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

They've always been called different things. First they were the Guardians of The Universe. Then The Guardians of Oa. Then The Guardians of The Galaxy. It just depends on what the writer thinks sounds cooler.

I think it is a lack of reconizition of the Guardians power, and authority to police. What would earth's leaders think if today in real life, they found out that there is a space orginzation of Police officers that would tell them laws, and came in and enforce it. The guardians aren't real good about asking others, and they don't seem to care. that is most likely the reason they were called this, and the reason that a lot of people deny their authority.

Maybe Adam Strange's just a little testy.

We co-opted nothing. We've always been called Americans.

True enough, but so have North, Central and South Americans. I think the slight that others may feel is that those in the U.S. at times, seem to consider ourselves the ONLY Americans.

I'm not sure why all of the cultures in the hemisphere would be that excited about being named after a European (Amerigo Vespucci), but hey, we are what we are at this point.

And Ravenwing -- yes, it is true, most Central and South American countries refer to people in the U.S. as United Statesians. It doesn't sound quite as weird in Spanish, but close.

As to our thread topic, I always went with Guardians of the Universe, but if the Blue Dudes vote for Oa as the heart of their mission to keep safe, I can roll with that. Guardians of the Galaxy sounds too small and...well, I liked the Marvel version of the GOTG way back when.

Hmmm, United States of Vespucci doesn't quite have the same ring to it. The good ol' U.S. of V!

Nah. After 500 or so years, I'm kind of used to America now.

I thought the "Guardians of the Galaxy" was a Marvel space team.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure in WHO'S WHO they're referred to as the Guardians Of The Universe, aren't they?

According to the Secret Files issue, they're the Guardians of the Universe. Guardians of Oa could easily just be shorthand. Just as long as they're not the New Guardians.

The Guardians of the Universe are from Oa, so they could be called the Guardians of Oa.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are a Marvel hero team, and it's just sloppy writing/editing if the DCU Guardians are labelled as such.

There are other Guardians in the DCU, notably the Guardians of the Clockwork Universe, who used to send Captain Comet on space missions. These are orange guys, but not short like Ooompa-Loompas.
