I actually was thinking back to when Superman Returns came out and how I was cynically thinking that they had him go away for 5 years so as not to have to explain where Superman was on 9/11. And then I was thinking of THIS Superman and thought that if he had been there on that day, his solution would have been to knock the towers down himself so the planes couldn't hit them.

And finally the "What? WHY?"

SPOILER. Highlight below text to read

Why exactly did Zod make Lois come along? That made no sense.

How did Clark, wanderer and day laborer, become qualified to be a reporter at the Planet?

All in all, it was okay. This Superman lacked the...earnestness and nobility I associate with the character.

-She knew who Superman was and Zod wanted as much info as he could get. Remember that it was stated that he infiltrated both her and Supermans minds while they were on the ship.

-In so many interpretations that NEVER makes sense. They never show Clark going to college and earning a BA or even interning somewhere...he just becomes a reporter on the spot.

I personally liked that she knows. Makes her seems like less of a dolt. Still, such bad casting for Lois.;

That she learns it EVENTUALLY, yes. Knowing it from the outset, no. Heck, because they were being so coy about naming him, she's running around Kansas and Metropolis shouting CLARK all the time.

I like Amy Adams as an actress, but she was almost the last person I would have cast as Lois Lane (They cast THE last person i would have chosen already, in Superman Returns).

I had severe doubts about Cavill when he was cast, firstly he was a Brit and I didn't think that would work again, and also I hadn't seen him in anything before. Having watched a fair bit of The Tudors recently I learned he was a pretty good actor who was incredibly good looking (well, he is isn't he), and from the clips I have seen he looks like a very good Superman.

The figures in so far make good reading for Warners, lots of money coming in and a generally positive reaction. Whether I eventually like the film or not its good to see it succeeding. DC need another hit.

Snyder, interviewed on Bleeding Cool says they are deliberately after a more realistic world than the Marvel films, and that the approach is quite deliberate to make it less 'comic-like' and more like 'if this was happening in the real world how would it look'.

As I said earlier, I didn't really enjoy Dark Knight as it was TOO grim (though more because it was too long and made no sense), but the public seem to have responded to it more so than the more generic Green Lantern, so maybe that is what works for the DC characters. Or then again, perhaps we should just take each film separately and not try to make sweeping generalisations over the success of one or the failure of another. I think I enjoyed GL more than Dark Knight.

My favourite superhero film of recent years was Iron Man. I never really even liked the character in the comics but this made me start reading his own title for pretty much the first time since about 1972. That film managed to be really funny without a hint of camp or the rather limp humour of the original Superman films which I hate.

I was talking to a buddy about the same points you brought up. And we concluded that with Chris Reeve, we felt safe.

George Reeves we felt safe.

Dean Cain? We felt safe and to some extent we even felt safe with Brandon Routhe's Superman.

But Henry Cavill's? We didn't feel like Superman would be there to protect us if something bad were to happen.

Okay THAT stuff was stupid. She gets out of the cop car and starts yelling CLARK!!! CLARK!!! As for her knowing off the bat...not really a problem for me.

A very good movie. Great action. I am not going to pee my pants that it's different than the Superman canon. Honestly! You make that many million dollars out of a moribund franchise then we'll talk.

With the exception of Cavill's Superman -- most find the rest "safe & comfortable", like an old shoe or comfort food like apple pie.

Goyer or Snyder made a great point, (paraphrasing) that Superman has been stuck in amber for over 30 years.

Is it realistic from the Reeves to Routh's to 'feel safe' -- it sounds like predictability & complacency to me.

Yes, what a horrible thing for the archtype of the superhero....the guy with SUPER in his name to illicit, a sense of security. Who doesn't want a hero in your city that just makes you think every time the ice maker goes on that he's about to come crashing through your building?

THAT'S a hero.

There's one scene that totally describes it for me. Zod through a gasoline carrier at Superman. Superman flies/hovers over it and doesn't even look to see if anything is behind him. When the truck hits the building behind him and explodes (destroying the building), he never even reacts. Right there is everything wrong with this Superman. You say it's Goyer explaining his choices, I say it's Goyer rationalizing disaster porn.

And I did it without random bolding.

You know I heard it here once, someone summed up Superman by saying that he was the one you most wanted to see when things got bad and it seemed like all was lost. That you didn't know how he'd do it but that he would somehow make things work out somehow and you'd invariably survive.

I am sorry that it seems like a simple value like inspiring confidence and hope and security in others is an ability that folks don't wish to see anymore in the 'modern' Superman.

What an amazing film. Action packed with just the right amount of backstory for my tastes. All the actors where perfectly cast. Even Lois. And Jor-el is a badass who rides a dragon!
Don't get the negative reviews, but, to each his own.
