Default Batman and the Outsiders #7: Discussion and Review Thread

By Nathaniel Ruff (also known as Binker and Nate on many forums)

BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS #7

Written by Chuck Dixon
Art by Carlos Rodriguez and Bit
Cover by Doug Braithwaite
Edited by Mike Marts

PLOT:
With Metamorpho still lost in space, Batman kicks his rescue mission into high gear! Meanwhile, the Outsiders are neck-deep in trouble of their own…deep in the heart of China!

REVIEW:
Last issue was packed with action, bits of comedy and weirdness, complete with its well-written storyline that pulled the issue off. Even with six issues in, I felt that the story hasn't been very clear on what the goal clearly is, as each issue bounced off into different directions. The only theory I had was that the series was mainly about the team going after piece after piece after piece of a puzzle that won't be revealed until they get there, or for us until the very end of the entire storyline. So it leaves us wondering, yet gets us excited as each new issues comes in. Well, the teams was captured in China, and now since they’re part of a team that can make alot enemies, let’s see what is going to happen next.

This issue was great as we got another well-written storyline, well-written characters, and alot of stuff that keeps this story kicking. The issue isn't mostly about what the Outsiders are doing inside China, but we do find out what the Chinese are doing to them, and it is ruthless. We saw what happened to Ollie in issue #6, with the repeated water sprays that had to be cold, but the others are repeatedly beaten. Enough so, that Katana, who is presented as good with what she does, has her face look like a mess. Man, this is surly one of the drawbacks being on Batman's team, huh? Also, speaking of the team and Batman, before, I thought of Batman as being an a$$hole for how he acted toward Thunder since issue #1, now he wants her help in rescuing the team, which is doubled as a second chance. Now, I like him. Unless, this backfires and he returns back into the a$$hole that is what Infinite Crisis/OYL got rid of. I like Thunder, and she should return to the team.

Overall, this was another exciting issue of Batman and the Outsiders. The issue, in many ways, rocked. Metamorpho also finds out that the so-called space station is actually a weapon. So now, the plot thickens as to what the heck is going on here. China is presented as ruthless toward the captured Outsiders, and Batman has let Thunder rejoin the team. I have nothing, and I mean it, nothing bad to say about this issue. I can not wait for the next one(s)!

RATING: Yay

Next Issue: the Outsiders in China worsens, and a guest appearance by Nightwing!

Good issue, and it makes me hope Cass and Anissa team up to just mow through people for the rest of the arc.

This book is probably at the bottom of my list when it comes time to cut back. There's nothing about it that makes it a must read.

But I am enjoying it immensely nonetheless.

Yeah, it's still in the "good but not great" category.

But I have no problem with "good". Beats the heck out of "dreck".

I'm prly in the minority, but I liked it better at the end of Winick's run. This really isn't doing much for me.

Best issue I've read yet - Dixon's not missing a beat!

His Ollie is written SO much better here than in his own mag.

Great to see Nightwing back for a visit.

The Rex subplot works fluidly!

The last page is just awesome. And I can so see Tatsu taking Cassandra under her wing, like she did with Gabby.

It was OK. The series has had some great moments so far, but after 7 issues we still have no clue what's going on and threads from the first arc are still dangling.

I'm fed up with everything feeling drawn out, I want some darn closure.

Cool to have Rex back as a major player though. JLI ftw!

Meh. I don't mind long stories at all (Claremont X-Men vet here). So not having stories wrapped up in neat little arcs doesn't bother me. But I hope the story finishes before Chuck left DC. Man that sucks.
