Default Supergirl cancelled (again)

Why is it that whenever anyone even comes close to getting Supergirl "right" they change writers and junk everything that came before or simply cancel the book altogether?

100% agree. The current run wasn't perfect (too much DEO stuff, not enough Catco & Danvers), but it was the best I've seen since the dawn of nu52.

and....cancelled.

I wasn't happy with the DEO stuff (seemed to be a weirdly long story arc disguised as a status quo change), but liked the title overall.

Right. Not all of the stuff shoehorned in from the TV show worked and it's never made sense to me that she would use her real Kryptonian name as her secret identity name but they brought her a long way from the hard-to-like character introduced with the New 52.

It's a shame that they couldn't have merged her and Lana with their pre-Flashpoint iterations the same way they did with Lois and Clark. I really liked that relationship.

It appears that Bendis has plans for her in Man of Steel which presumably will influence whatever comes next.

I thought there was some talk that Supergirl and Supersons were being cancelled due to the Titans/Teen Titans realignment?

I'm personally worried about Bendis on Superman as it is (but that's a different thread I guess).

I did read something about that but it's hard to imagine that Supergirl wouldn't have her own book - at least while the TV series is still going strong.

The June solicits have the new rosters noted, and neither Supergirl or Superboy are on either team.

Hey, SG fans have nothing to complain about. Imagine being a Power Girl fan...

At least SG like Cyborg, is certain to get a new book, or perhaps two, soon, and has had at least a few actually decent stories.

Being fans of certain characters is tough.

Although I could see them trying to make their Supergirl book a team book if its true that SG's cancellation is tied to the JL/Titans stuff (and not just for letting Bendis do whatever to all the Supertitles).

I'm quite excited for this. Andreyko did some great work with Manhunter.

As a Supergirl fan I have to complain about her positioning way, way back on the Heroes in Crisis cover. And Power Girl only slightly less so.

Batgirl is right behind Batman and Robin is behind Superman.

Even if she doesn't figure prominently in the story, a member of the Super family deserves better.

At least Supergirl is currently part of the DCU and has maybe a reason to be there; as it stands, I'm wondering why PG is even there, she's still stuck in limbo. And if this is a future thing, stil, why bother putting her on the cover, it's unlikely she's part of the story.

As someone who is more a fan of Power Girl, and not so much a fan of Supergirl, I'd like to think there is ample story opportunities for both characters. Hopefully, that could happen sooner rather than later.

There should be room for both. But for that to happen, a couple of things are needed. First, DC and WB need to commit to both characters; right now they're completely behind Supergirl, and seem to have decided to abandon Power Girl almost completely.

Secondly, they need to differentiate the characters. With PG apparently not existing in the current DCU, and possibly to be reintroduced sometime later, they have a golden opportunity to do so. They need IMO to make her a different Kryptonian from the main DCU universe, related to both Superman and Supergirl, but NOT Kara Zor-El. Then, they need to stop giving Supergirl ALL the things to do, and focus her on a narrower niche, and give another niche to Power Girl. And they need to finally give PG a definitive origin story. Which is to say they need to spend more than a panel or two on it; give her a mini at least to establish it, and perhaps a Year One type thing. WB has to do it's part too. PG is almost totally absent from other media, SG is all over it. Perhaps move that proposed SG movie to be a PG movie instead. You get the same benefit from having a female Superman relative, but without the expectations and baggage SG brings from her TV series. And you possibly get to expand your movie universe by tangentially bringing in the JSA through Power Girl...or whichever other team you wish to associate with her.

DC and WB's biggest problem with PG seems to be how much she resembles SG----she literally IS SG, but from another universe. So change that, give her a new and richer story.
