Default Space Cruiser Yamato: Rebirth

No, this is not a joke. Space Cruiser Yamato (aka Star Blazers) is evidently making a return in Japan, in a new movie set 17 years after Final Yamato and starring a mixture of new characters and old. And yes, the title is indeed Space Cruiser Yamato: Rebirth. I didn't even know this was coming out until I stumbled on these trailers and then did some digging on the 'net. Its scheduled for a December 12, 2009 release date.

Here are the two Japanese trailers:

Last I heard, Yoshinobu Nishizaki (the series creator) and Leiji Matsumoto (series designer) were locked in a legal dispute, which supposedly made any new version of Yamato with the old character and technical designs all but impossible. I guess some kind of agreement must have been worked out, because this clearly has the original character designs albeit with some modern updates.

Judging from the trailers...
SPOILER. Highlight below text to read
Kodai Susamu/Derek Wildstar is the captain. There's a blonde woman who looks like she might be an older Yuki/Nova, but I can't tell for certain. There's also a young woman who appears to be Kodai & Yuki's daughter, and appearances by several familiar characters as well. Can't tell much about the plot, though. But Earth appears to be in trouble again, and the Yamato goes out to kick butt.

Anybody else know anything more about this movie? Really hoping this lands here in the US at some point.

Huh. Here's Wikipedia's entry on it:

Yamato: Rebirth

In March 2002, a Tokyo court ruled that Yoshinobu Nishizaki legally owned the Yamato copyrights. Nishizaki and Matsumoto eventually settled, and Nishizaki began work on a new movie titled Yamato: Rebirth (宇宙戦艦ヤマト 復活篇 Uchū Senkan Yamato: Fukkatsu hen) (set after the original series), while Matsumoto planned a new Yamato series. However, additional legal conflicts stalled both projects until August, 2008, when Nishizaki announced plans for the release of his film on December 12, 2009.[7] [8].

The press release describes the overall plot as follows:

In the year 2220 of the Western Era … A crisis is approaching Earth—the expansion of a moving black hole. An operation of immigration is undertaken to move over 300-million people from Earth … The latest transportation fleet is attacked, but is defended by Space Battleship Yamato, now commanded by Susumu Kodai (38). Aboard is daughter Miyuki … child of Susumu and Yuki.

Trailers for this film (which can be found on YouTube) indicate that the production makes ample use of CGI for the space battle scenes. It is not certain whether computer graphics are used for the character animations.

Rebirth is set 21 years after the first Yamato story and 17 years after the story of the last film, "Final Yamato". The biggest theme of the new film will be environmental issues and how humans have treated the planet Earth. Out of the 1,860 cuts (shots) in the new film, 700 are being produced with computer graphics. In particular, the battle scenes will composite 3D sequences and computer graphics. Nishizaki established a new studio called Enagio last year just to produce this film. The title battleship's size will be mostly unchanged at 263 meters in length and 62,000 tons in mass. In the previous anime stories, the Yamato's signature wave-motion gun can take out an entire fleet, but firing the gun used to leave the ship drained of power — and vulnerable — until it could recharge. In the new film, the gun can fire six shots in a row.

Beast Boy/Raven 'shipper

Where is John Galt?

Looking for meaning, searching for answers, finding nothing but loose change and pocket lint.

Uch senkan Yamato, directed by Takashi Yamazaki, is in production now.

Here's an interesting post from August Ragone (writer of EIJI TSUBURAYA: MASTER OF MONSTERS) about the Live Action film from a thread about the new Yamato films over on the Classic Horror Film Board

They're shooting for a Dec 2010 release atm.
