This week I felt retired for maybe the first time, everyone has been asking me how retirement has been going? I like to tell them it’s kind of like the fellow who jumped off the thirty story building, as he went by each floor someone ask how’s it going, he would say, “so far so good” anyway this past week my wife and I went to the city about 30 miles away to go to the big box lumber store. Now if you have read any of my other retirement post you will see that so far it has felt a lot like unemployment. I worked as a carpenter for 35 years and many winters we would be laid off, this past year has been real bad work wise. So I took my retirement and so far have not looked back. That said, it has been more like a long winter lay off or very long weekend up until this week. We stopped in a restaurant and had dinner, almost everyone in there was our age, and yes we had the senior menu discount. Then we went to the lumber yard and picked up some things, I have shopped there for years in my work cloths and hulled things to the job site, today I was in my clean jeans and white tennis shoes, I looked like a shopping tourist. Then after leaving to head home out front of the place was a new credit union being built, there were my old pals working …all I did was lay on the horn and drive right on by. As well earlier that morning my son had stopped in and drove off to work without me, for ten years we have worked together and rode together and there he was going off and I was standing in my pajamas with a coffee in my hand. He had stopped to pick something up, now he and almost all the guys have only been back to work a couple weeks they have all been laid off most of the winter until late June. So now they are back to work and I come and go as I please….it’s so far so good.

i know when i lost my job how useless i felt. you go around putting in job applications and you sit around waiting for that call that never comes. i think you will get stir crazy in a few months. i know i couldn't stand around doing nothing for too long. right now i am in my last week of a three week vacation. already my body is getting stir crazy. sitting around relaxing is nice. your mind gets bored. looking for something to do.
