Yeah, it was a circumstantial case, which are hard to prove. And that's the thing right there I guess, the fact that even if you know something in your heart, you can't convict if the prosecution didn't put on a convincing case. But still, I can't help but feel justice was NOT served here, at all.

Have no knowledge if the case itself - but the cable coverage that makes it onto TV shipped up here into Canada. Wow and uhhhhh, the screeching and retching. I wonder how she got a fair trial at all - the media had pronounced her beyond guilty long before the trial. Perhaps, that led to a jury that they got - so much of the rest were tainted by the never-ending screamfest. Not sure why that is acceptable - but on this one, thankful that generally the Law in Canada puts insuring a fair trial ahead of making a buck from "if it bleeds, it leads" type journalism. But when I channeled flipped, the whole tone turned my stomach every time I came across it.

The whole trial seemed like a cluster to me. The prosecution had only circumstantial evidence, and the defense attorney's closing arguments sounded like a bunch of word salad to me. That guy was awful! There was no justice in that court room, just a big circus filled with clowns.
The whole thing makes my heart hurt. The defense knew they could basically throw anything at the wall because without a clear cause of death, and only the fact Casey acted like a complete sociopath about the death of her daughter, that wasn't enough to warrant a conviction. All it proves is that Casey is an unfeeling beotch. Intellectually I know the right thing was done, but it just doesn't sit right for me.
And this is why I should never be on a jury, because I'll become too emotionally involved

But consider the alternative - just by public opinion. In the Common Law approach the state/crown needs to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. In the French Code, I believe, it is the accused who needs to prove their innocence. I think in the end, our system allows for a greeted chance of justice being done. I think if a few cable shows not latch on to this case, people would not have the visceral reaction. I do find it odd that this case became a national media event? Sadly there are many cases like this each year and they don't become circuses?
It is weird that this case became so important. That I will admit. And yeah, I still feel our justice system is the best in the world. But I look at the way this woman reacted to her daughter's death and I just can't help but feel something is up. Was it murder? I guess a can't say yes, and legally I'd have to say no. But something is just off about her. Something happened, and at the very least (and this she was convicted of) she wasn't forthcoming about it. And she'll have to face some kind of punishment for it at least.
I love that she's happy as hell. So happy in fact that her an her legal team are toasting and drinking champagne. I love that she can be so happy, even though the death of her little girl still goes unsolved. You would think her priorities would be different. Oh well booze it up lady. You're not giulty!
